I. Project Overview

The University of Birmingham was funded in 1825. The university boasts a time-honored history and is part of the prestigious Russell Group. The University of Birmingham has five colleges with strong teaching and research capabilities. The school is home to more than 27,000 students, including more than 4,500 overseas students. It has many outstanding alumni including Li Siguang, a prestigious geologist and Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Up to now, the University of Birmingham has produced 11 Nobel Prize Winners. The University of Birmingham consists of two campuses—Edgbaston campus and Selly Oak campus. The Edgbaston campus is widely recognized as one of the best campuses in the UK. The campus boasts clear lakes, green trees and well-arranged buildings. There is a 100-foot-high clock tower on the campus, a landmark building of Birmingham. It was built to commemorate the first president of the University of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain.

Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK after London, and is located in central England. The city blends traditional and modern styles. Birmingham is the heart of the United Kingdom with its roads and railways extending in all directions. In addition, it is close to the National Exhibition Center and Birmingham International Airport. All this makes Birmingham an international metropolis.

Since Nankai University signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Birmingham in 2009, it has provided many students with opportunities to study abroad. This has played a very important role in promoting the internationalization of the graduate education in Nankai University.
